Monday Motivation…Andrew Sparks

Monday, love it or hate it, its a new day filled with new opportunities to get up and make something of yourself. To get up and be better than you were yesterday. And to help Im sharing with you one of my own persoanl inspirations, Andrew Sparks from Sparks Elite.

Charlie: You are a successful performance coach and mentor – what do you attribute this success to?

The first is having a good understanding of people and the way we think. This allows me to get to the bottom of issues quickly and also see the upside that people are looking for. Secondly, education. I am always learning, and finally, determination. If you want to be a leader and innovator, you have to work like one. You can have a million dollar dream, but if you have a hundred dollar work ethic, that’s all you’ll get.

Charlie: When did you decide to you wanted to be involved in the wellness industry?

I sort of fell into it. I needed to work on a few things myself and when I learnt some things, I knew I could help other people. That’s where this all began and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Charlie: What inspired you to follow your passion?

Seeing the changes in people. Helping people be, do and have more, and being able to play a small part in that is what inspires me to do what I do.
Charlie: How do you feel as an inspirational figure/mentor?

It’s great to be able to help and inspire people. That’s what it’s all about for me – helping people achieve more than they thought they could before we met. If I just do that for one person out of a room full of people, I’ve done my job. It feels pretty damn good.
Charlie: Has there been any challenges along your journey?

More than I could list. That’s how this whole journey started. There were personal challenges on many levels and today there are business challenges every single day, but when you get past those, you grow and gain belief that anything is possible. That’s what I believe now and I would never have believed that if I hadn’t had the adversity to overcome. I don’t see those things as bad, I see them as awesome, in a way. Everything that happens to us, happens for a reason. We make a choice to either be a victim of it, or make it a strength.

Charlie: How do you maintain balance between your Career and personal health?

Balance can be difficult when you’re teaching high performance, and being congruent with what you teach. It’s living to my values is what makes it work. My top 3 values are my mission (business), my health and fitness and my relationship. When I focus on those things weekly, I’m on track. There’s no couch time and less times with friends and family than I would like, but that’s the stage of life I’m at. In 5 years, my goals and values will be different and all of this will probably be different.

Charlie: What do you believe are the keys to success in business?

Keep it simple. People make things way too complex. Aside from that, make sure you have the right strategy and then work hard. Honestly, that’s it. If you master those 3 things, you will be wildly successful at anything.

Go and get it. Don’t stop. It’s your dream and you can do it. Push hard and realise your potential.

Connected; under the starlight…

Last night I did something I havent done for a while, something that makes me truly appreciate the world we live in.

I took some time to lie and star gaze. What a beautiful sensation. Allowing the cool breeze to caress my skin, my thoughts to come and go, and just to be quiet and lie, still.

I know that a cure for insomnia nad anxiety is to walk barefoot on the grass. Why? Because you feel connected, or the new term for this practise is ‘earthing’. We all want to feel connected to something, to the people around us, the world we live in and ourselves. But sometimes life gets in the way.

As I lay gazing up at the night sky, open to whatever thoughts I had…I looked at the stars in wonder.

Some shine bright…so bright that you almost think they are the only stars there. Then as you train your eye, as you look deeper, you can see the other stars shining, perhaps not so bright, but they are there. Then if you know constellations, you can start to connect them all.

In a philosophical manner, I saw this as seeing some of my own qualities/shining brightly as my strengths, other qualities/the ones I have to search for my not so strong points, but they were there, and they all connected to make me the person I am today. I truly felt the essence of the statement ‘everything you need is within you’. The stars/qualities I had to look for are an essence of the qualities I am searching for within myself to find strength and trust.

I also contemplated the stars like life, like people. Some people shine brighter than others, so much so, they are all you see at first glance. But, as you adjust your eyesight/personality and own life, you start to realise there are so many other people/oppourtunites, that are there, sometimes not shining so bright or getting attention, but they are there. And we are all connected.

I felt myself connected. I felt appreciated. I sent love to my family who I miss every day of my life. I let go of all my worries. I just lay in the darkness, underneath the starlight, breathing.

It was only more perfect when I realised that yesterday was earth day.

It is our light that most frightens us…

After a long weekend spent with friends and also working (when you work for yourself, all days are the same and there are no days off/love it), I was genuinely surprised by the love and support, the genuine appreciation for what I am doing with Clean Treats aka #charliesballs. I felt my heart warm. Wow. I had created a product that people not only enjoyed, that was healthy but that they wanted to be a part of, they wanted to support me (thank you to everyone who has done their own Instagram & facebook posts for me… #ballers),.

Now, as you now, we all have our own self belief expectations, a place of success that is comfortable, that is aligned with what we believe about ourselves.

When we start to push that barrier, it can become scary. Last night at 12pm I suffered an anxiety attack. Its been awhile since I have felt this ‘on edge’, unsatisfied, uncomfortable feeling. I was a little thrown. My Negative thoughts started to occur…

Who do you think you are?

Youll never make it.

It wont be good enough.

Youll do it wrong. Something will go wrong.

You dont deserve such happiness.

And so on.

OUCH. I remember these feelings and thoughts, and they hurt. Where had they come from? Id spent a weekend with people telling me how much love they had for me and how amazing #charliesballs were.

Expectations.

Fear of failure. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of being truly great. The fear of risk.

I had also spent the weekend finalising my packaging designs, nutritional information and some fun admin things…I had to make the bIG decisons, on my own. I really had to find my own sense of self trust to invest in what I thought was right, although it may be wrong…this was scary! I felt excited but I also felt the pressure.

We often fear things that arent even real, we create situations in our mind that arent based on  facts and start to indulge in a world based around these unreal facts. I realise for myself, I am scared. Its ok to admit it. Im scared, excited, nervous and grateful for the opportunity that has been presented to me.

Do I feel supported, yes and no. Every person I meet will give me their opinion, even when its not asked for, but is this the same as working with someone, a lover, a business partner and making those difficult decisions together, no.

So anxiety, where does it come from? For me, its the thought of the unkown (a little bit ironic that I have chosen to work for  myself and chase my dreams where everyday is different to before), the insecurity. I am creating something that some people will love, some will like and some wont. I have to be prepared.

I had to self soothe with all the powerful affirmations I have learnt…

Everything will be ok. I love you. Trust the process. What is meant to be will be. You can do it. BREATHE (I had to actively practice my breathing technique…4 counts in hold, 4 counts out, hold & repeat).

I just didnt know what to do with myself. I started to create a world of what ifs, and felt my thoughts spiralling downhill, fast.

Where you focus your intention, energy goes.

Then dust it off. It was only a thought, only an emotion and its gone. Today is a new day, a day to make magic happen. Today, I am going to be the best I can be.

Must have now…Green Tea x50

I used to live my life on supplements, protein powders, bars, pre workouts. I was an addict.

I am an all or nothing personality type. I remember one particular Drs visit where I had to calculate the amount of caffeine I was having…a total of 800mg per day…no wonder I was suffering anxiety and had a high level of reaction (rather than response) to situations, and would collapse from exhaustion and adrenal fatigue on weekends.

Now after creating some hormonal imbalances for myself I try to get my nutrition from food where possible, but whilst also understanding that we live in a chemical world. Yes, we can buy organic, yes we can only eat fresh real food, but to do this all the time would be a full-time job, including gardening and harvesting your own produce (a personal goal is my own veggie garden), and meal preparation.

One of the products that I LOVE and still use daily is Green Tea x50.

Not to forget the benefits for weight loss. Reports have shown that green tea extract intake is associated with increased weight loss due to diet-induced thermogenesis, which is generally attributed to the catechin epigallocatechin gallate. That catechin-polyphenols are known to be capable of inhibiting catechol-O-methyltransferase (the enzyme that degrades norepinephrine) is a possible explanation for why the green tea extract is effective in stimulating thermogenesis by epigallocatechin gallate to augment and prolong sympathetic stimulation of thermogenesis. With easter only days away, we can be so tempted to over indulge ourselves and let go of our fitness goals (I know I personally struggle).

I wanted to share with you some interesting numbers that will be helping me stay on track this Easter (as you know I’ve just started my I CAN have it all fitness/nutrition plan).

I used my all time favourite Creme Eggs (yes, I know how these temptations melt divinely in your mouth) and compared the macro (nutrients) and ingredients to a Clean Treat Love Ball (for those in the know or following the latest social media craze #charliesballs)

Busy or productive?

The most common reply I receive when asking ‘how are you?’, is ‘Im just SO busy.’ Yet I have to wonder if this ‘busyness’ is just a quick response, a way to verify our importance. Im busy, therefore I am important. But how often is your ‘busyness’ productive?

I have found that busy can actually mean chaotic and stressed, and means I’m unsure how to plan my time efficiently and effectively.

I know this to be true for myself. Yesterday I failed to plan my day right, therefore I found myself doing things twice, taking longer and having to redo things that should have been done and rush to get everything into my day. Failure to plan created anxiety, stress and pure frustration at myself.

We all have the same amount of hours in the day. We all have the same hours as Beyonce & Barack Obama, you have the same amount of hours as the person who inspires you most.

Busy, does this verify your importance? Not at all. Busy can mean the opposite, it can mean that you are not taking the time to evaluate your  core needs and core requirements i.e fitness, healthy eating and ‘me’ time. Busy can be a disguise for the things we hide inside, particularly loneliness. In a social aspect I know certain people who book up there social calendar until its overflowing, as a way to feel wanted, needed. Then because they have not yet discovered the importance of commitment to your word, they cancel last minute. Is this productive? A sign of respect or appreciation for your loved ones time and energy? (I used to be prone to doing this ALL the time, now, if I say I will be somewhere I will).

Busy…what are you chasing? Success? That promotion at work? The pat on the back? The 6 pack?

Take some time to SLOW down, appreciate the moment you are in and ou will see, this is happiness. Not tomorrow or when those things happen, right now. Take time to breathe. If thats all you do today, thats fine to. Breathe it all in, let it all out. Deeply.

When we take a time out from the ‘busyness’, notice what comes up for you…boredom? Loneliness? Look into your emotions and feelings and where they are derived from. This will give you a greater sense of self, a sense of strength to be more productive in everything you do.

Busy is a word that the monkey mind loves. Thoughts swinging around, no mental focus or clarity, 100 projects on the go with no real direction. Hmm, no wonder by the end of the day you feel exhausted.

Take time to plan effectively, every day. As Im building a business, I have found that I say ‘yes’ to anything and everything (work) that comes my way, as you know there is no stability when you work for yourself, so Im living in a ‘do what you can now’ mentality.

But I needed to take a step back. Last week I was sick for a whole week. I cant remember the last time I have felt so bad. It was my body, letting me know I needed to slow down.

Prepare orders. READ, Meditate or Yoga. Bed by 10pm.

This may not look like a lot, but I am happy to say, I am proud of my efforts, my accomplishments, every day, especially the days that I plan.

Monday Motivation…Sally Matterson

As Im re-focusing on my own health, I needed a source of inspiration.

{Selflove Sunday} Believe in yourself.

Trust and knowledge that they can accomplish anything they put their minds to, belief that they have it within in them, what it takes to make a difference, to live their dreams.

The most valuable lesson you can ever learn is the cultivation of self love, for that includes belief in yourself, appreciation for all that you are yet a desire to become more.

Do you have a dream? A passion? A purpose?

How can you expect to attain your goals if you dont believe in yourself? How can you reach your definition of success if in your heart you dont believe you will ever succeed?

You may have heard about my latest, unexpected #ball business (Clean Treats). The demand, popularity and feedback has truly blown me away, I couldnt have wished for anything more from something I just fell into (yes the ball business 🙂 But I cant keep floating along the wave of social media, the hype of a new product…today is about creating a business plan, writing down goals (remember a dream is only a dream until its written down, then it becomes an achievable goal). After only 3 weeks, its time I create a plan.

It is essential to write your dreams down. Create goals, have a clear focus of what it is you want and what you are working for every day, whilst enjoying the precious moments within the journey. This is where most people fail. We keep our dreams in our minds, in the ‘one day’, ‘if I could, I would’ thoughts. Whats holding you back? We all have greatness within us. Trust me.

What is stopping you? Your own self belief system. From the day we are born, until this very moment we are influenced by our environment. We have an integral self belief system of what level, where, and what we will do. Are you limiting your own potential?

This includes the people we surround ourselves with. It was stated by Jim Rohn (an entrepreneur, author & mentor to Anthony Robbins) that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Take a moment now, think about those you surround yourself with daily, their words, their actions, are they doers? Positive? Negative? Become mindful about those that influence you. You are most likely unaware of the effect these people have on your life. Be with people who inspire you heart, the ones who are chasing their own dreams, the ones who believe in you. The ones you have ‘those’ lightbulb conversations with.

As I have found myself, started working for myself, and as I like to say, Im a dreamer, and a doer, my circle has changed. I want to be inspired. I want to feel my heart fill with pride and joy for those I love when they follow their dreams. I dont want to talk about the 9-5 complaints of the corporate world, the everyday problems. I choose to speak about our joys, our successes. Because we all have problems. But what you focus on is what will grow. Choose your thoughts, your conversations, and the investment of your time wisely.

As I’m writing down my BIG goals, I feel it in my heart, running through my veins, that this is right for me.  Mind; business. Body; sharing the healthy word. Soul; creating something for myself, following my passion. and I am grateful. Even when I have to do the things that arent necessarily my favourite, Im grateful for the opportunity to do more, to become more.

Sure, they are only healthy #balls, theres plenty out there, but I am in competition with no one. Im doing it as my small part in creating change within the world. Sunday funny, I sing to my balls, (LOL, but true) the soulful, strength building, wise words of India Arie, I infuse every ball with love, and my energy (in macrobiotic & ayerveda traditions they believe in the energy that is infused whilst creating a meal, and suggest never to prepare a meal whilst you are feeling angry or upset. Just think about when your not feeling so great, you always want your mums home cooked meal, because its infused with LOVE). Every Clean Treat is someone making a healthy decision over a not so healthy one. Its one insulin spike against the obesity epidemic. As I write this, my heart is full. I am passionate. I believe.

I am my own best friend. I can say ‘I CAN do it’ against a world that will tell me I cant, or people that may laugh at my BIG goals, BIG dreams. I trust my decisions, my actions and my heart. I will make mistakes, Im perfectly Imperfect. Im just doing what I can with what I have, not tryint to be anyone else but myself on this beautiful journey that is life.

You have to believe. You have to wake up every day and be passionate. You have to know that whatever you decide to do, you can do it!

Theres a well known story about the 4 minute mile, the power of belief. Roger Bannister an oxford student, a runner who achieved 4th place in the 1952 Olympics, began to question his skill. Instead of giving up he set himself a new goal: to be the first man to run a mile in under 4 minutes. At this time in history, no one had ever accomplished this, Drs said it was impossible for the body to run that fast.The biomechanics, our nature wouldnt achieve this. Roger Bannister believed he could. He trained and trained. His first attempt was 4:03:06, close but not quite, but close enough that he realised his goal was within reach. He trained harder. 1 year later he ran the mile in 3:59.4. He achieved his goal. Interesting enough, just 6 weeks later another runner broke the 4 minute barrier, and in years that followed many more did the same, repeatedly.

What happened? Belief. someone tells you you cant do something, believe you can and go out there and do it. Whether it be a fitness goal, business goal, desire, dream, passion chasing goal. You can do it. But you have to write it on your heart EVERY day that you can, every moment of every day. You have to live your dream, breathe it, sleep it. This is passion.

From what I have been told, the messages I am now getting (& I feel it) I am now one of these people. I actually LOVE life. I am now one where every problem is an opportunity, I possess a ‘can do’, ‘will do’ attitude, and sport the ‘I wont quit’ determination.

This is me now, grateful for every day. Every possible opportunity. Every moment. Not a day goes by I dont feel blessed, feel my heart fill with love and gratitude for everything I have created.

This wasnt always so, I used to live in the darkness and saw no reason for life itself. I gave the purpose of my life, my heart and my soul to another person, needless to say when that didnt work out I wasnt left with very much. I didnt want to live. It has taken time, and hard work, but I have found my very own happiness.

Through cultivating a sense of self, appreciating who I am, exactly as I am, not worrying about what happens tomorrow or when I reach the goals I set for myself, but now. Here, in this moment. I have cultivated an attitude of gratitude. For everything and everyone in my life, now, the past and yet to come. I have made peace with my past, the person who I used to be that wasnt necessarily good, and acted in ways that are the opposite. My past does not define me. Through taking the time to find myself, I have found my passion, my pure purpose in life.

I will then provide a personal recommendation for the following week. Week 1: Mind. Learn to focus your mind with tips and tools. Plant seeds of positivity and create a healthy mindset to ensure success of the lifestyle change. Learn to change your automatic thought patterns.

Week 2: Body. Personalised nutrition and exercise advise. Nutrition consultation & begin to alkalise. Find what works for you. Learn to appreciate the beauty that your body is. Understand how to listen to its cravings and how to eat for your hormones.

{Fitness Expert} Denver Steyn…Eating Disorders

I have spent time connecting with so many different people throughout my career, and recently I have spent more time actually listening to them, not the kind of listening that has my monkey mind wondering about what Im going to eat next, who I need to call, or what I need to do, but the real type of listening, the kind where you absorb the other persons words, active listening. It has been during this practice of listening I have been amazed at the wealth of knowledge that surrounds me…I felt it only right to share with you.

Today Im sharing Denver Steyn, a fitness expert who is a leading personal trainer in Qld, but also a genuinely good guy with a desire for knowledge and passion for fitness. He is (one of those) IIFYM followers, and it works for him. He is also a pro at the ‘selfie’, pre, during and post training. See below.

Nutrition is a core component of building muscle, losing fat, and ensuring your body is working as it should by providing the essential nutrients required to thrive and survive.

It is generally agreed that when you eat less you lose weight. When you eat protein you encourage your body to build and maintain muscle. When you eat carbs you provide your body with energy. When you eat fats you provide your body with essential nutrients for hormonal balance and transportation of other nutrients.

With that said, it is clearly important to incorporate all three macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat) in your diet.

People who go to extremes have the main goal of building muscle. This means more protein. Generally in excess of any study known to man. Protein protein protein. Every day. Every meal. In generic quantities without any consideration. 200g portions in the form of animal protein, 6-8 egg whites, protein shakes. Simple generic portion sizes. Some how it is whats required to get the job done, irrespective of a personal body composition assessment.

So if protein builds muscle which is an obvious major goal, and I need to eat less to lose weight, why not just eat minimal amounts of carbs and fats? That works right? How many times have you heard of people who “live” on chicken and broccoli. It has become more of a joke these days however it is still very relevant and continues to happen.

The issue is, people see short term results and don’t consider the long term effects. Eat protein; build muscle, eat less; lose weight or even; get “shredded”.

Knowing the importance of nutrition, your body will always get the calories or nutrients it requires to survive. It is simply impossible to excessively under eat without your body responding in more ways than just losing weight, or body fat. What I mean is, when you are restricting your daily food intake your body will force you to give it what it needs to keep functioning at its preferred level of health or body composition “set point”. This is part of why we get cravings, why we snack on foods without thinking, and the big one; why many people are binge eating on a weekly basis.

Having a diet that focuses on protein intake and not much else, you can bet your body is fighting you on a daily basis. How many times have you had that craving to eat one small treat and ended up eating everything in sight? That could be an example of your body “getting what it needs”, regardless of what you are trying to force it to do.

So when fitness goes too far, people are following eating plans that have very little consideration or recruitment of essential dietary fats and carbohydrates. Protein is the key, with green vegetables and salads not really for the micronutrient content but more because they keep you full and help in the process of feeing “okay” in what is essentially planned starvation.

Binge eating is prevalent amongst those who preach the idea of “eating clean” or being strict with generic uneducated fitness eating plans. More so, it is associated with those who are over eating protein but under eating total calories in an effort to build muscle and get shredded.

I have seen first hand people who claim to be health & fitness role models who are closet binge eaters yet portray a lifestyle of nothing but clean foods and won’t allow their image to be hurt by being truthful about their less than desirable eating habits.

Although I have never been one to hide my eating habits, I have spent multiple periods of my life where I was doing everything you have just read. Under eating, binging, thinking nothing but protein and a few fibrous vegetables was a way of life. I thought it was a necessary sacrifice to get that elusive shredded and muscular physique. It is obviously a less than desirable outcome when you realise you have developed an eating disorder and have created a yo-yo cycle of “clean” and “dirty” eating as well as a fear of certain foods and a very restricted and psychologically damaging approach to nutrition. The first untold truth.
