High Expectations or Close minded.

After a few disaster first dates (in succession), I have had to stop and take a moment to evaluate what was happening.

I made a vision board at the beginning of this year, in love it stated ‘to live with an open heart’.

I believed I was/am finally ready to find love, to feel love (you may recall my history, the cheating, abusive, lying ex, the fake engagement ring, the other girlfriends, and in turn my own insecurities emphasised).

‘The most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.’ Thich Nhat Hanh

However, as the dates fail, Im left to question… is it me? As I have cultivated self love, and am chasing my dreams, I know I am very driven. I believe hard work and persistence will eventuate to success. Is this too much for some males? I have come to the conclusion that it just might be (please note these are only my thoughts, about my experiences), especially if the male doesnt yet have their own dream job, or life in control. Is it threatening for a female to be more successful than the male they date?

{#funny as my range Clean Treats aka #charliesballs are extremely popular this may be impossible literally}

Or is it just that my expectations of ‘just knowing’ are to high? I must admit I am a hopeless romantic (and I express this through all my social media channels repeatedly), the very thought of ‘just knowing’ makes my heart smile. So after 1 date with no fluttering of butterflies I chose to not pursue it and instead become ‘busy’.

“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day…” – Ryan Gosling, The Notebook

It was brought to my attention that this could be very close minded thinking. A friend (who I would say is a serial dater, 3 or more per week) made a comment that to her it was the second date that was the most interesting, it was when you could talk about things deeper than the ‘who are you’, ‘what do you do’ level and find out if you actually had a connection (I wouldnt know as Im a 1 date wonder).

However, I value my time (if any of you have created a business you will understand the time it takes), in fact the honest truth is I would prefer to be labeling, designing, anything empire building elated then enduring these bad dates. If after 1 date I dont feel the ‘magic’ I dont feel it beneficial to invest more of my time. Believe it or not, but with the ex, I knew…from the moment I met him I would love him (perhaps this alone is a sign saying I shouldnt be looking for the same feeling).

‘I knew the second I met you that there was something about you I needed. Turns out it wasnt something about you at all. It was just you.’ Beautiful Disaster, Jamie McGuire

Open heart…seems I am only able to give love without letting anyone get to close to me. Sadly, this is true. Ive spent so long re-building my life to where it is today (I experience complete happiness, contentment and bliss everyday) that I am living in fear of someone coming and taking it all away from me.

Seems to me I am still living in fear of heart break. Like what was done before, the tear apart your life heart breaking hurt, the kind that left me lifeless.

‘when you love someone / you are scared of getting hurt / and you will get hurt’ Brandon Scott Gorrell

As I read self help, self love and psychology books they all advise…never to settle. So as we get older, love ourselves more and become scure in our chosen careers, our list for a suitable companion also grows…becoming nearly impossible for anyone to succeed.

High expectations…is it too much to ask for flowers?

‘And in her smile I see something more beautiful than the stars’. Across the Universe, Beth Revis

Let me tell you, that the last 3 first dates I have been on, they each expected (and asked for) an invite upstairs to my apartment. This alone guarantees you no callback. Seriously? First date = action? I must have missed this rule whilst I’ve been to busy chasing my dreams. The worst, is that each of these guys are/were friends with me on facebook and I am quite sure that I make it known Im not that type of girl.

A males expectations…horizontal cardio. My expectations…soul warming chat, perhaps a flower or 2, NO PRESSURE.

No wonder were (Im) living in a world of confusion.

Love & light, Charlie x.

Or am I just in love with the idea of true love?

(thanks Disney)

‘He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.’

Monday Motivation…Alison Morgan {Relauncher}

Are you waking up feeling a little ‘ugh, its Monday’? Monday, a word most people dislike, but why? Are you dreading a week of ‘work’? Perhaps this is something you may need delve into within yourself, are you doing what you love? Personally, Monday excites me as its a fresh start, the beginning of a new week…bringing new opportunities.

‘The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart’. Helen Keller

Last week I was lucky enough to meet this gorgeous woman; Alison Morgan from Relauncher; a source for health and wellbeing solutions.

Alison is an expert Business Coach, creator of the Australian Health and Wellness Networking Events and Industry Blogger.

Charlie: You have created a successful career as a health & wellness expert/blogger, what do you attribute this success to?

My passion for health and wellness combined with specializing in Business and Marketing in the Corporate world has been key to creating the success of Relauncher.

It’s really important to do what you love and you’ll thrive!

Charlie: When did you decide to you wanted to be involved in the wellness industry?

I had 2 children close together.  I didn’t want to go back to the Corporate lifestyle, so started focusing on what I could do with my skills and interests to create my own business.

I spent a year planning Relauncher – it’s a long time, but I wasn’t in any rush.  The boys were my primary focus while they were still young and at home.  When they started school, I then launched the business. It’s now been over 4 years since the site went live!

‘Try to be a rainbow in someones cloud’ Maya Angelou

Charlie: How do you feel as an inspirational figure/mentor?

I truly love what I do.  Although the hours are long – I enjoy every moment.

I’m a Health & Wellbeing Business & Marketing Coach and the creator of the Australian Health & Wellness Networking Events.

I specialise in taking businesses to their next level, and thrive on connecting like-minded people via the networking events.

It’s an honour to be in the position I’m in and one I’ve worked very hard to achieve.

Charlie: Has there been any challenges along your journey?

Many!  As most Small Business owners will agree – the first couple of years in business can be tough.

Although I have degrees in Business and Marketing and over 15 years experience in large organisations – my learnings through running a Small Business and taking it from hardship to success is immeasurable.

What Relauncher is today, is very different from what it was when the company first launched.  I had 2 other business partners; the branding, offering and business model were completely different!  It’s this journey, which has made me an expert at what I am today.

‘Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.’ Buddha

Charlie: How do you maintain balance between your Career and personal health?

I get up super early each morning to fit everything in.

I’ve also been streamlining the business over the past few months, so I’m working more effectively & efficiently.  It’s a continual work in progress as the business grows, however it’s going in the right direction.

It’s really important to have a balance between work and lifestyle, so I’m strict with myself about the times that I work to ensure I have time for my family.

Charlie: What do you believe are the keys to success in business?

Follow your passions, have a plan and be unique.

Below are my 5 tips for business success.

  • Create a solid foundation.  This involves:
    • Vision Statement, Target Audience, Key Messaging, Services / Products, Clear Marketing Tools
  • Know your target audience
    • An age bracket of approx. 15 years, demographic, lifestyle, interests, location, types of jobs, marital status, male / female…..
  • Create strong key messaging
    • This must be a series of succinct sentences – approximately 3-5 messages depending on your business.  The messages should feed into your Vision Statement.
  • Revisit and refresh your business 6 monthly
    • This may seem quite frequent, however if you revisit and refresh more often, it’s a smaller job and keeps you on track with communication.
  • Don’t be a copycat – be unique!

seslf sabotage 2Charlie: What is your advice for anyone who has a dream?

‘We know what we are, but know not what we may be.’ William Shakespeare

Follow it and don’t hold back.

Take educated risks and climb out of your comfort zone.  If you would like guidance – hire a coach to help you get started / take you to the next level in your business.

Charlie: What can we look forward to next from you?

So so much!  Never a dull moment

I have a lot of Business Coaching clients which keeps me busy, plus I have upcoming business development workshops in Melbourne and Sydney.

I’m also working on some other exciting new projects, which I’m really enjoying!

Introducing… MUSCLE #balls.

Peanut Butter.

Chocolate Brownie.

Lemon Creme.

Vegan. Paleo. Gluten free. Dairy free. Refined sugar free. AND guilt free.

‘Take care of your body. Its the only place you have to live.’ Jim Rohn.

This range includes a natural high grade Pea Protein:

Pea Protein is the perfect source of protein for Vegans, vegetarians, or anyone trying to live a ‘cleaner’ lifestyle. Dairy free, gluten and soy free it has a unique array of essential and non-essential amino acids, especially high in Lysine and Arginine.

A study published in “Agro FOOD Industry Hi Tech” in 2012, found that Pea Protein is similar to the protein derived from eggs and SOy, both considered complete proteins.

‘Lysine cannot be made in the body and must therefore be consumed through the diet. Lysine is the precursor of carnitine, the molecule responsible for converting fatty acids into energy and helping to lower cholesterol. Lysine also appears to help absorb calcium and plays an important role in the formation of collagen—the building block of connective tissue such as bones, cartilage, skin, tendons. It supports the normal growth and development of children and plays a role in the maintenance of a healthy immune system. Lysine deficiency is rare in typical American diets but can be a risk for strict vegetarians, vegans or elite athletes. Insufficient lysine can lead to fatigue, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, agitation, bloodshot eyes, slow growth, anemia, and reproductive disorders. Although the US has not set daily individual amino acid requirement levels, two studies have indicated that the estimated average requirement for lysine for a 70kg human ranges between 800-3000mg/day.’ Extract from growingnaturals.com

‘Pea protein is a good source of arginine, an amino acid your body needs to build muscle. Arginine is conditionally essential, meaning that you need more of it in times of stress or illness. You’ll get more arginine from pea protein than from other protein sources, according to an article on the FoodNavigator-USA website.’ Extract livestrong.com

Pea Perks

Unlike popular whey protein powders, pea protein digests easily since it contains absolutely no lactose or glutens. That means no bloating! Many “healthy” foods lead to bloating, which is a common food allergy symptom.

Pea protein may aid in weight loss by possibly lowering ghrelin levels. Ghrelin is a substance secreted by the stomach that signals the brain to stimulate the sensation of hunger. Ghrelin levels tend to rise within a certain time period after consumption of a meal in anticipation of the next meal, thus signaling hunger.

Pea protein slows this process by forming a greater number of peptides, thus delaying gastric emptying, lowering ghrelin levels, and sustaining satiety for longer periods of time.

Unlike whey, pea protein is naturally cholesterol and fat free. Pea is also free of animal protein and soy proteins. It is considered a “greener” product than animal-based whey. Extract bodybuilding.com

For all these reasons and more {I myself and currently starting my journey to a vegetarian lifestyle with only half of my week including meat} I have chosen Pea Protein. Personally, when I use it…it feels good on the inside {just like my #balls}.

Monday Motivation… Kate Russell {Lululemon}

Its important we surround ourselves with people who inspire us. But to also remember that these people are real…chasing their dreams, following their passions {beating their own trials & tribulations}.

‘Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.’ Dalai Lama

This is why I believe its important to share love & support, lets celebrate the good things in life, the simple things like kindness.

Introducing Kate Russell, Regional community manager, Eastern Australia and New Zealand lululemon athletica, and one of the kindest people you will meet.

Charlie: You have created a successful career within a leading fitness wear brand, Lululemon, what do you attribute this success to?

For me, passion drives success. I believe in creating the life you want to lead, regularly stepping out of your comfort zone to open up new opportunities.

On a daily basis, I’m lucky enough to coach teams to develop and execute events, build and connect relationships, discover the coolest events, places and people around, all in between a yoga or fitness class.

‘Be kind, dont judge and have respect for others. If we can all do this, the world would be a better place. The point is to teach this to the next generation.’ Jasmine Guinness.

Charlie: When did you decide to you wanted to be involved in the wellness industry?

I worked in technology and corporate PR (public relations) for six years and loved it. The adrenaline and ever changing nature of the PR world drove me, along with being surrounded by smart team members every day. However whilst I was immersed daily in a world of technology and business, it didn’t come naturally and I realised I was beginning to resent it.

In my spare time, I would read wellness blogs and constantly update my bucket list of things I wanted to achieve (most of which were fitness related!). It was no shock I loved leading a life full of fitness and health. I had a eureka moment one day and thought, imagine if I could combine my love of fitness with building relationships, connecting people and working with like-minded people? And from that moment, the job with lululemon was born.

It is crazy how when you put something out there, channel your positive energy to it, you can reach that goal (or in my case, my dream job).

Charlie: What inspired you to follow your passion?

There were two defining moments for me. The first one was after I was asked to write a blog for a close friend about my journey on training for a half marathon. My manager at the time read it and told me that I inspired her to focus on a goal and then go after it….hard! The second eureka moment was during a brainstorm in my old agency when we had to come up with three words to describe the person sitting next to you. My colleague described me as “enthusiastic, motivational and inspiring”. Those moments made me really think hard about finding a career where I could blend my strengths with my passion.

Charlie: How do you feel as an inspirational figure/mentor?

I actually don’t see myself as being inspirational but if I’m to put a label on it, I guess I hope to see myself as more of an enabler – full of energy and a drive to create a life (work and personal) that I look forward to living. I try and pass that onto those around me. Nothing makes me happier than spending time with someone to work out what they want out of life and giving them the passion and enthusiasm to then go and get it.

Charlie: Has there been any challenges along your journey?

Absolutely. You can’t grow without falling down along the way. However it is how you pick yourself up and keep going that either makes or breaks you.

Charlie: How do you maintain balance between your Career and personal health?

I love this question because I always wanted to have a “job” that was doing what I loved every day, so therefore wasn’t really a job!  And this role at lululemon is absolutely that. I get to work out every day, trying new personal training and yoga studios around Sydney and connecting with driven people who love what they do.

I do also have a great friends around me that remind me when to ‘switch off’ because when you blend what you love with your job, it can be hard. Whether it’s going for a walk with a girlfriend to having lunch and a few glasses of wines, this balance is what keeps me grounded and successful at what I do.

Charlie: What do you believe are the keys to success in business?

Identify your strengths and work out how you can use them every day; Network and create relationships with people who will grow and inspire you and then write a game plan of how you will reach that goal.

Also focus on attracting motivated people to create a culture that breeds success. Provide foundations for employees to build their skills, shape their career and essentially move from being good to being amazing.

‘A dream doesnt become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work’ Collin Powell.

Charlie: What is your advice for anyone who has a dream?

Write that dream/goal/ career down. And then write down three steps on how you can achieve that (i.e. whether it’s saving $X per week or attend one new working event per month). Once it is down on paper, your mind will unconsciously start creating the path to reach that dream.

‘Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.’ Harriet Tubman

Charlie: What can we look forward to next from you?

2014 is about taking myself on. Backing myself and taking risks. Getting even more out of my comfort zone.

It is an exciting year for lululemon and I’m ecstatic to be part of driving the company’s vision and brand in Australia and NZ. You will continue to see great technical athletic pieces for both women and men and innovative pieces that will help take you to and from your yoga and gym class.

Charlie: Top 3 healthy tips/advice?

  1. Be kind to your body; you only have one!
  2. Avoid classifying foods as “good” and bad”. Because the rebellion in us will always make us want the “bad” foods at some point
  3. Sweat every day; whether it is yoga or a HIIT session, get your body moving. Everyone loves that sweaty glow

I sincerly thank Kate for her time.

Monday Motivation…Green Tea x50

Monday morning, for a lot of us today is the day we return to our work/careers, the office. I thought a Monday motivation post would be definitely required, especially after relaxing holidays and perhaps some overindulgence (I know alot of people are starting their new year diets today).

‘Accept responsibility for your life. Know that it is you who will get you where you want to go, no one else.” Les Brown

Today I would like to introduce you to one of my favourite products, Green Tea x50 & the director behind it, Steve Trinder.

Charlie: You are the director of one of the must have health products  of the moment, what do you attribute this success to?

I  am the director of Tribeca Health which makes GreenTeaX50 and Skinny Protein. It’s a labour of love. GreenTeaX50 was born out of an idea for a healthy, preservative free energy drink that…

Raspberry Ketones…the latest craze.

Before I start my review, I want to state that I promote healthy balanced eating and excercise before the use of thermogenics or stimulants.

‘Life is not merely being alive, but being well.’ Marcus Valerius Martialis

However. Sometimes we need an extra ‘something’/boost to stay commited to our fitness and health goals (I know I do, especially in winter when my bed, my teddy bear, a herbal tea and good book call out my name).

I believe its important that you research whatever it is you are putting into your body and understand the effects it will have.

One of the latest ‘buzz’ words has beenRaspberry Ketones. I remember when I heard about it last year and its benefits, I couldn’t wait to get my little hands on some (although iherb was sold out) for some significant thigh shrinking action.

‘The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not’ Mark Twain

So Raspberry Ketones, what are they?

Also known as Cetona de Frambuesa, Cétone de Framboise, Raspberry Ketones, Red Raspberry Ketone, RK, it is a chemical from Red Raspberries, but can also be found in Cranberries and Blackberries. Used predominantly for fat loss and lean muscle mass it can also be used on the scalp for hair growth. Interestingly, a raspberry ketone is the particular raspberrie smell and was originally used for cosmetic purposes.

“The greatest wealth is Health.”  Unknown

A study has shown that a ketone prevented weight gain in the liver, and gains of visceral fat (the bad fat) around organs (Journal of Life Sciences).

Another study showed the ketone increased the breakdown of fat molecules/lipids in the fat cells. It was also stated to increase metabolism by promoting the secretion of the protein Adiponectin. Obese people, and diabetes sufferers generally show low levels of this.

Love the skin your in…apllying Rasperry ketones directly to your skin is shown to have positive effects to combat ageing (we all want to look younger for longer). One study showed that after a 5 month period of use, there was an improvement in skin elasticity and hair growth ( journal Growth Hormone & IGF Research).

‘Raspberry ketone is the primary aroma compound of red raspberries. This compound regulates adiponectin, a protein used by the body to regulate metabolism. Raspberry ketone causes the fat within your cells to get broken up more effectively, helping your body burn fat faster. The recommended dose is 100mg per day. To get the same benefit from the whole fruit, you’d have to consume 90 pounds of raspberries. ‘ Excerpt Dr Oz.

Please speak to your nutritionist or GP if you are currently taking any medication, or suffer from anxiety/stress related disorders. It’s important to understand that everything we put into our body, becomes us…so learn about what you are using and how it will interact with everything else you are doing (medication, supplements and lifestyle).

‘The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease.’ Thomas Edison

Note: Overall, the U.S. Department of Defense Human Performance Resource Center deems the weight loss evidence on raspberry ketone as “insufficient.”

Ive recently tried Ketrim which is a more natural thermogenic. A natural energy source, it also has HLA, caffeine and Green Coffee Bean. Sweetened with Stevia.

I personally found this was a good ‘pre-workout’ as a source of clean energy without a ‘come down’ effect. It was brilliant pre-running and before morning cardio.

Like anything, I recommend to get advice. Find out what works for you and do not use thermogenics as a permanent solution. Create lifestyle changes. But, if you need a kick-start #bootupthebum, this may be the product for you without getting to caught up in the world of supplements.

(I am in need of that Boot, capital B…too many Clean treats taste testing happening over here)

Dont forget, the new MUSCLE ball range (Peanut Butter, Nutella and Lemon Creme) has been released for review. Samples are being sent with every personal order charlie@charliedehaas.com.au. MUSCLE balls; Gluten, dairy, refined sugar and guilt free, higher protein level utilising a Vegan pea protein. No nasty preservatives.

Mind + Body + Soul = Happiness

‘The root of all health is in the brain. The trunk of it is in emotion. The branches and leaves are the body. The flower of health blooms when all parts work together. Kurdish Saying

Self Sabotage…do you practice it?

Self sabotage… Do you know what it means? Are you prone to it?

‘I have a tendency to sabotage everything. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of being afraid. Useless, good for nothing thoughts.’ Michael Buble

I am. All my life. I had a belief in myself that I would never be much, never exceed expectations in fact it was lucky I finished school (well I can’t even say that I think I quit after 15). Perhaps it’s fair to say I am lucky I didn’t end up in serious trouble (I am still told now as an adult that I could have gone either way…juvee, jail etc). As I break these beliefs and create my dream reality I am still suffering this old habit… Self sabotage.

Basically what self sabotaging is (you don’t even need enemy’s you do all the work to bring yourself down), is acting in a way that is not positive or supportive to yourself. For some this may be procrastination (yup, I get that one), turning to partying/alcohol/drugs as a way of stress relief, escape (not me), poor self care, no motivation to exercise or eat well… this is me.

I have become a stress eater. Addicted to sugar and my own product {Clean Treats aka #charliesballs}. As my days get rapidly busier (even with my experienced planning skills) I reach for something to get me through, rather than meal prep (because who likes chicken and broccoli anyway, which I definitely don’t feel the energy I need from) I reach for my own product (insert LOL here), as clean, healthy, guilt free as they are, I am also an impulse eater. I have been for years. One of those types of people that cannot have a packet of Tim tams open in the pantry (nek minute…gone).

‘For me personally it is because I get an awful amount of success and I dont think I deserve it and then I want to sabotage it.’ Michael Parkinson

SO. Self sabotage. A way that you act to bring yourself down when you are pushing against the confines of your comfort zone. And it’s a tricky one. One thing I am trying to work on is to realise that this is what my habit is (plus the sugar, glorious sugar, natural of course that provides me with an instant energy hit to so I can do what needs to be done to build my empire) and practice what I preach, mindful eating & preparation.

‘The ego mind both prefesses its desire for love and does everything possible to repel it, or if it gets here anyway, to sabotage it. That is why dealing with issues like control, anger, and neediness is the most important work in preparing ourselves for love.’ Marianne Williamson.

It’s really quite strange as I have always, always cared about my health, my weight & my Body as my number 1 priority. As my business blossoms into something I only Dreamed of, my priorities have changed. I can honestly admit, I would rather be emailing, writing, researching at night time than at the gym (don’t hate on me) and have only just found the balance in my own life after 3 months starting up to get back to the gym (because gym is in actual fact my only Boyfriend and always there for me). My next step… Breaking my #ball/sugar addiction.

self sabotage

How do you act as self sabotage towards yourself?

‘A person’s worst enemy can’t wish on him what he can think up himself.’ Proverb

This is being your own worst enemy…instead be your own best friend. Before you act, stop and think about what is happening, where is this urge coming form (for me it’s stress/a feeling of being overwhelmed. In eastern philosophy, craving crunchy foods is a sign of stress as crunching is a form of stress relief. ever grind your teeth when your asleep?), what situation has occurred, what can you do instead. And try to remove yourself from the situation ASAP.

Change your thoughts. It’s not easy, impulses make is all act a little unkindly towards ourselves and others.

Hopefully I’ll soon be able to write about breaking up with sugar.

I would love to hear your success stories about breaking habits, addictions; sugar or anything that you have accomplished to create a healthier, happier version of yourself.

The Skin Expert…Your skin.

Today I wanted to introduce you to the gorgeous creation that is your integumentary system; your skin.

All to often we take our skin for granted yet get upset when we get fine lines, acne, spots (especially on those special dates). We have high expectations of healthy, glowing radiant, perfect skin, yet what are you doing to enjoy this?
