Monday. A new day, with new opportunities.

Your thoughts create your world.

Todays Monday motivation feature is the gorgeous Jacqueline Evans who is a nutritionist, naturopath, researcher, whole food lover, educator and the creator of Jacqueline Evans organic skin care {wonder woman much?}.

‘Find something to celebrate each day’.

TT-JEvans-portrait-1-1

Charlie: You are the Founder Jacqueline Evans skin care, a successful natural and organic range, what do you attribute this success to?

So many different factors Charlie. But ultimately I believe it is lots of hard work and having unwavering passion for what you do and what you stand for.

 jevan11

Charlie: When did you decide to you wanted to be involved in the health industry?

After studying Chinese at university, I became very interested in Eastern Medicine. I then went onto to study naturopathy and suddenly everything I was learning at college connected with me; it just made sense. I have an absolute obsession with biochemistry and understanding how the body works. New research is confirming that the food we consume has the ability to ‘communicate’ to our genes, and this verifies that we are able modify certain lifestyle related illness with our food choices. That’s pretty powerful.  After years in the industry looking at food and nutrition, I became aware that the skin is our largest most permeable membrane and will absorb up to 60% of what is applied to it. I quickly looked at the ingredients in all my personal care products and was alarmed. Having a hormonal imbalance myself, but have a balanced diet, this seemed to be the missing part to the puzzle. I spent about 8 years developing the range (and growing the self belief) to launch the range, which is made entirely of natural and organic ingredients.

‘The thousand mysteries around us would not trouble but interest us, if only we had cheerful, healthy hearts.’ Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

Charlie: What inspired you to create the range?

After years in the industry looking at food and nutrition, I became aware that the skin is our largest most permeable membrane and will absorb up to 60% of what is applied to it. I quickly looked at the ingredients in all my personal care products and was alarmed. Having a hormonal imbalance myself, but have a balanced diet, this seemed to be the missing part to the puzzle. I spent about 8 years developing the range (and growing the self belief) to launch the range, which is made entirely of natural and organic ingredients. It is our ongoing commitment that no harsh or detrimental ingredients are used. Finally, I wanted to do something different in a very cluttered and sometimes confusing industry; by keeping our range simple, honest and natural.

 jevan3

Charlie: How do you feel as an inspirational figure/mentor?

Thank you. You know, I try to be an inspirational role model for my two daughters. They are my biggest students and also my biggest teachers.  They have taught me lessons like perspective and patience.  I want them to know that they can dream big and achieve anything that want.  I am encouraging them to have a healthy relationship with food and of body image.

‘All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.’ Walt Disney

Charlie: Has there been any challenges along your journey?

Yes, I’ve been learning as I go that’s for sure.  Starting out, my biggest challenge believed in myself enough to take that leap of faith and quit my full time job and focus on building a skin care brand.  I now have a very small team of amazing people that help me, but starting out the isolation of working on my own was challenging.  I missed having someone next to me to bounce ideas around.  Looking back, this forced me to throw myself out there and network with like-minded souls in the industry and from that I have forged some incredible relationships

Charlie: How do you maintain balance between your Career and personal health?

This is such an important question. When you are running your own business, it is 24/7and all consuming, so making the time for yourself simply has to be a priority. For me it’s the little things, the little things that are achievable such as, stopping work and eating lunch at the table or outside with no distractions of the computer, not checking my phone until my work day officially begins, the occasional soak in the bath with some Rose & Vanilla Bath Salts, moving my body, and we have a strict no technology in the bedroom rule and I try very hard to get to bed around 10pm most nights. My non-negotiable is always choosing food to nourish my body.

My mantra for 2014 is to go SLOW.  I feel like I spent last year in fast-forward, and so this year I am desperately trying to live in the moment. Its not always easy or possible, but I am trying.

‘He who has health, has hope. And he who has hope, has everything.’ Benjamin Franklin

jevan2

Charlie: What do you believe are the keys to success in business?

Hard work, passion, self-belief, taking risks, listening and did I mention hard work!?!

My principles are very simple — source the best natural and certified organic ingredients, offer honest, expert advice and create incredible products to feed and nourish your skin.

Charlie: What is your advice for anyone who has a dream?

Own your dream, in every sense, then just do it!

‘Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.’ Harriet Tubman

Charlie: What can we look forward to next from you?

I’ve been listening to you all and am so excited to let you know that we will be launching two new Hand Creams in the coming months!!

Charlie: Top 3 healthy tips/advice?

1.Take ownership of your health. Take the time to listen to your body and what it needs.

2. Hydrate. Drink more water and moisturise

3. Eat Well. You are what you eat.

The Skin Expert…The importance of Cleansing

For those of you (myself included) that perhaps neglect to take your makeup of at night time, this is for you, I also thought cleansing would be a brilliant place to start for ‘The Skin Expert’.

skinc5

So lets start with one of the most imperative steps to your skincare regime…Cleansing.

Why its important…not to mention the amount of makeup we pile on our faces to be more attractive, but throughout the day we are exposed to environmental toxins, all the suff we can’t see;

  • Persistent organochlorine pollutants (such as dioxins, PCBs some pesticides)
  • Chemicals (such as solvents, formaldehyde, vinyl chloride, some pesticides, ingredients in cosmetics or other substances applied directly to skin)
  • Metals (such as nickel, chromium, etc.)

Our skin is the largest organ of the body and its job is to protect our internal organs. Your skin is the first step of protection and an integral part of your immune system. The skin breathes; inhales (oxygen and nutrients) and exhales, it senses heat, cold, pressure . Also, what we eat becomes us. The food we choose this month, is effectively next months skin. I know myself, if I havent been on form, healthy eating, exercising and thinking…Ill see this in my skin.

Some people may experience skin disease and disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or even pigmentation as a result from toxins on the skin and in the body.

Keep it simple. Cleanse.

Theres no need to invest your $$$ on an ‘advanced’ cleansers, your cleanser is only designed to be on the skin for a few moments, which in this time is not long enough for ‘those’ expensive or ‘miracle’ ingredients to be absorbed all the way to the germinativum layer (the lower level of the epidermis).

What to use?

My advice, stay away from any product containing Sodium Laurel Sulfate (a highly toxic ingredient used by many products to ‘foam’, sometimes seen as SLS), use gentle cleansing products that don’t leave the skin feeling tight or stripped. Generally if you are left with this feeling, the products you have used may contain alcohol, or if it is an active product (alpha hydroxy acids etc) you may have over used the product therefore causing damage to the skins natural defence barrier (also called the rheins barrier). This can also be seen in the skin by an uneven redness. If you start to notice this, monitor the products you are using and how long you are using them for.

A few of my favourite organic skin care cleansers:

Aeos Cleansing Oil De-Maq; a beautiful blend of sesame, avocado and spelt oil to effectively remove makeup (including eye) and surface toxins. This range also incorporates blends of plants extracts with energies from gems and crystals.

skinc1

Alexami Purifying Gentle cleanser, Aloe vera based so its excellent for sensitive skin (I personally suffer from Rosacea, one of the most difficult skin concerns to treat), white tea as an antioxidant and chamomile. Gentle, yet effective and smells delicious.

1622203_10152311293673619_2001941515_n

People for Plants Foaming Gel Cleanser; containing grapefruit as a refreshing, revitalising extract, this is brilliant for combination skin (especially for that time of the months ladies when you experience breakout because from hormonal changes). Also containing Aloe Vera to calm. This brand is also cruelty free.which I LOVE!

skinc3

So whats the harm in sleeping with your makeup on? Well as your skin cells naturally desquamate (this means dead skin cells are forced off the surface of the skin as the new skin cells come through. Skin cells have approx a 28 day turnover process) at night time. When you sleep with that makeup on (that enhances your natural beauty)…your skin isn’t able to proliferate these cells properly (so its actually doing the opposite). They cannot breathe and in fact you’re ensuring that the makeup gets trapped within the skin cell layers causing congestion and toxins within the layers of the skin.

If you experience underlying congestion (when you run your fingertips over your skin and feel ‘something’ underneath), this may be a reason.

Get cleansing. Every night. Then nourish with renewing, active ingredients (that’s a post for another day).

So, with just a little insight as to the importance of cleansing, I hope that tonight you do (and every other night).

Love the skin you’re in,

The Skin Expert x.

Self love Sunday…self care (is important)

Perhaps it’s because I surround myself with women that are ‘go getters’, you know, the ones that are always on the go, they have dreams and aspirations, they are those ones who are crazy enough to believe they can change the world (and I have no doubt they will), but I have found that there is feeling of exasperation that’s increasing…the feeling of the weight of the world on your shoulders, even if it is only your surrounding world (that’s more than enough).

‘To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.’ Thich Nhat Hanh

sls1

You see for these strong, focus driven, dream chasers their surrounding worlds; partners, lovers, friends and family depend on them and turn to them as a constant source of support and inspiration. Which is of course brilliant, but as I have found, as a giver, a lover, peace sharer; we tend to just keep giving.

Self love Sunday is about reigniting that little light within yourself that can start to dimmer throughout the long week, as sometimes you may give too much or as life throws you challenges. Self love sunday is your time to restore. However self-care is usually the first thing that we compromise, when really, how can we expect to be a source of strength and guidance for others when we arent feeling more than 110% (because I have discovered you need more than that to be able to do so)?

Self love Sunday, invest in yourself. Self care is the most valuable investment you will ever make. Do it regularly.

You deserve it, you are worthy, self care is a NON negotiable.

sls5

‘Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.’ Carl Gustav Jung

Use this time to check in with yourself, how are you going? How are you feeling? Stop. Truly ask yourself, how am I feeling? If your feeling a little out of sorts or under pressure, ask yourself, what do I need in this very moment? You have within you the answers you seek, its imperative we take this time to be still and listen.

So, your self care may be different than mine after all we are indiciduals. After 30 years of learning to love myself, my body, my (sometimes/most the time, complicated) mind, my investment is:

sls2

Firstly, Im cleansing, my body and also my week.

Babe Himalayn Salt scrub – Get a juicy booty…yes please!

1. Himalayan salts mixed with almond and essential oils.

Simply apply in the shower when wet and scrub.

Removes excess dead skin cells. Did you know as you age your skin cell proliferation process sloowwwwws down, this means dead skin cells stay stuck to the surface of the skin for a longer period of time leaving the complexion dehydrated, aged and dull? Say no, and get your glow on with this salt scrub. I will be focusing on particular problematic areas (that lovely addition some of us are graced with, because our bodies are gorgeous with or without it…cellulite). Manual massage over these areas will improve your lymphatic system which is your body’s waste removal system, therefore helping you to remove those disgusting toxins that don’t belong in your beautiful body, and that cause our least favourite attribute…cellutlie.

2. Alexami purifying gentle cleanser.

Certified Organic Australia; this means NO parabens (interesting fact, parabens have been found in breast cancer tissue), no mineral oil, no propylene Glycol, no SLS (I will be writing more on this Sodium Laurel Sulphate and its dangers in the upcoming weeks on The Skin Expert), no synthetic fragrances or artificial colours.

Say yes to feeding your skin organic goodness.

This cleanser has one of my favourite ingredients…White Tea plus Chamomile for calming, Vitamin E, antioxidants (they fight the free radical damage/toxins) and elderberry extract. It sounds good enough to eat, and the beauty of organic products is that they are. It’s imeprative you cleanse your skin every night, twice if you wear makeup to remove the environmental toxins, dirt and impurities.

Then I’m going to nourish my beautiful body (always repeat positive affirmations, every positive thought you have is a seed, and they will grow. The truly priceless relationship you will ever have is the one with yourself).

Body: Dr Lewinns Tone up Body Moisturiser

Advanced Liposome technology, which means the ingredients are designed to be delivered into the lower levels of your skin. Alpha Lipoic acid is an antioxidant with the unique ability to recycle Vitamin C and gluthianone once used within the body (this means you get more nutrient value). Again, I will be paying particular attention to ‘those’ areas and ensuring my movements are upwards towards the heart (this helps to flush the toxins to the lymph nodes located in the groin (femoral or inguinal).

‘You can’t build joy on a feeling of self-loathing.’ Ram Dass

Face: AlexamiExotic8 Facial Oil

Certified organic & blends together 8 restorative essential oils, plus Acerola berry (antioxidant and some studies show it can promote the production of collagen, which as you may know naturally slows down as we age) and Black tea (protects against UVB and has been called the natural alternative to sunscreen, it also helps repair the damage caused by UV rays, the damage that leads to mutated cells and can then lead to cancer).

Its ideal to use high quality products laden with antioxidants and beneficial ingredients in particular at night time as this is when the skin cell renewal process takes place. Your body is releasing growth hormone and trying to repair the free radical and toxin damage down throughout the day, give it a little helping hand with restorative products.

sls4

Then…relax time. What I call ‘Charlie time’, a good book, my new-found addiction (that is good for me) Pukka tea and a delicious soma bite (you must try these as a healthy treat if you havent yet). Certified 100% natural organic, no added sugar (no guilt, I LOVE), and gluten free AND homemade…yum. These little treasures also contain Goji berries (another addiction), Chia seeds and almonds, super food; super treat

‘You must love yourself before you love another. By accepting yourself and fully being what you are, your simple presence can make others happy. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love & affection.’ Buddha

And lastly but definitely not least, I will be resting my clean, nourished, relaxed self on my new Slip (for beauty sleep) pillowcase, made from Mulberry Silk; anti-ageing, anti-wrinkle and anti bed head hair (yes, I am a little bit of a product nerd I am so excited, I have had this all week, but because I believe in making things special/rituals and appreciating the small things, I thought it would be perfect tonight). I will be resting my cleanse, nourished skin on these the deluxe slips as I mediate for a productive week.

Yes, I would say this is a self-care evening, preparing my skin, my body and my mind for the amazing week ahead (which I already know will be full of opportunities, because thats all I choose to see).

Whatever it is you are doing…make time for YOU. You deserve it, you are worthy, you are your #1 priority.

Love & light,

Charlie x.

sls3

Just say yes.

Have you ever thought about how many opportunities you are missing?

‘To succeed, jump as quickly at opportunities as you do at conclusions.’ Benjamin Franklin

o1

How often do you say no?

Are you living your life with a closed heart, are you afraid of change or are you to set in your ways?

As I reflect on the relationships I have in my life, friends, family (& lovers, kidding, this position is currently open), I understand that everyone has a WIIFM (Whats in it for me) mentality. We have become so busy, wrapped up in our own lives, our own ways we need to find benefits and rewards before we step out of our comfort zone or our preorganised time schedule for other people. It can be difficult to look past the ‘whats in it for me’ mentality, and do something purely for whats in it for the person you love? Contemplate that.

I have been prone to experiencing a feeling of loneliness, even though my life is filled with love and happiness, I still felt a sense of being alone. After all, who was there that truly loved me? This was felt after repetitive efforts of catching up with my good girlfriends, yet due to the pressing schedules of both of our lives weren’t able to make long overdue plans. This has happened more than numerous times. A sense of disappointment, loneliness and a seed of weakness in our friendship would develop within me.

‘I’ve been lucky. Opportunities don’t often come along. So, when they do, you have to grab them.’ Audrey Hepburn

o4

Yet, as I reflect (the new year is the perfect time to be working on your strengths and weaknesses) I realise that this was not their issue. This was me, being the perfectionist, scheduled, time efficient woman I am…when I would request or try to organise our girlie/guy dates, I would only offer things to do and activities that worked into MY life. The things that I liked, regardless of them (I must say most of my social circle is health, active living focused so I am lucky I created that, but not all are).

A friendship is about compromise. Acting in this manner wasnt beneficial to either of us.

Start syaing yes. Yes to a coffee date, yes to a skydiving experience, yes to a 6am bootcamp (even though that means an atrocious 5am alarm and multiple grumbles from all participants 😉

Make time for the people you love, and create experiences and memories, doing what THEY love, not just what YOU love.

‘Opportunities multiply as they are seized.’ Sun Tzu

Say yes to an art exhibition, to paintballing, to trying new foods.

o2

The world has so much to offer. Experience it. Breathe it in. Let it in.

Yet so often we are quick to say no. To live in our own bubbles with our blinkers on. Open your eyes, open your heart. And I can promise you you will be more than surprised, not just by who or what comes into your life, but by the true beauty of nature, the opportunity to feel free, to remember FUN.

‘Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them.’ Orison Swett Marden

If someone wants to go out for dinner or the movies, but you feel like staying home (this is generally me, a homely girl), just go. This is how we connect, how we feel love. Be with the people who matter to you and who you matter to. I realised that those temporary feelings of loneliness were my own creation. It wasnt due to anyone elses negligence in offering me opportunities, it was my own stubborn/laziness.

After only a week of what feels like I have been living at a retreat (I have a soulsister staying with me for the week from melbourne, the week has been filled with every organic cafe, store, and green smoothie bar, yoga studios, training and every other type of productive activity you can imagine; goal planning, personal strengths & weakness analysis, cleansing, release work, the list goes on), I have had to practice the art of patience having another person in my life, yet have been able to truly  experience the pure delights of true friendship, love and new experiences. I have ben able to let go of my daily schedule, adn just ‘go with the flow’ and my what a journey. Memories of a lifetime are made of these moments.

‘A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties.’ Harry S. Truman

o6

I have written before, previous years mantras (focus) have been; respond, don’t react ’12’; Everything in balance ’13’.

This years mantra is to live with an open heart, even at the risk of being hurt. And if that does happen, that isn’t my karma that’s someone else’s, but I will choose to see opportunity and to love with an open heart, to give without expectation and to be open to new opportunities, new possibilities.

Love & light, Charlie x.

GMO’s…what are they?

I’ve recently being studying the effect food has on our bodies, how what we eat we truly become.

“Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.” Anthelme Brillat Savarin

aacf1ceba3b66fec87e349acedc35da7

Today I reviewed GMOs and wanted to share with you some of my findings:

A GMO is a genetically modified object. This means that the organism has been modified from its original genetics (DNA). It has been altered from its natural true form.

There is an ever-increasing amount of genetic modification in our food. Most commonly; corn, soybeans, potatoes, canola, pineapple, strawberries and SO many more. The purpose of genetically modifying food is to grow stronger pest resistant crops, add nutritional benefits nad longer shelf life.

‘Chemicals, n:  Noxious substances from which modern foods are made.’  Unknown

The reason I wanted to share some information is to express my beliefs about health and lifestyle; stop the diet, just be REAL, not fake.

julia-child-quote-fresh-ingredients

Daily we consume these altered substances via our food, plant genomes are cross-breed with the desired qualities for the best outcome. Pesticides, herbicides and the meat we consume, which is fed GM food.

Are genetically modified objects safe? Although supported by some large federations, there is a lot of controversy to the long-term effects of GMOs in our bodies.

‘High-tech tomatoes.  Mysterious milk.  Supersquash.  Are we supposed to eat this stuff?  Or is it going to eat us?’ Annita Manning

Think about it, if GMOs are used in the form of a pesticide in or on plants, it does its job by killing the bugs nad preventing crop wastage. What is the difference between these bugs and us? Size, that’s all. And we consume GMOs daily…and they build up in our system…think about it.

Interesting, some plants are bred with a GM herbicide or pesticide. What then happens is they cross-breed with weeds and grow super weeds which are then also herbicide nad pesticide free, making it difficult for farmers to manage.

How do you know if you are consuming GMOs? The good news is Australia has laws that state GM foods must be labelled. You can find this either on the label of the food, or next to the specific ingredient (i.e soybeans genetically modified). However there are exceptions, if there is under 1% of GM ingredients, companies do not have to label this as its included as unintentional or accidental.

IMG_0285

‘I love fresh fruit and vegetables. I’m not a strict dieter. I don’t think that anything in life should be so regimented that you’re not having fun or can’t enjoy like everybody else. JUst know that fresh food is always going to be better for you.’ Carrie Ann Inaba

Food that is due to be consumed immediately, from restaurants does not require GM labelling, although it is the owners responsibility to provide the consumer with true and correct information about the food.

To improve the efficiency of animal production, researchers are using gene technology says CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) This research, uses the altering of DNA in livestock populations to selectively breed animals that produce more meat, milk and fibre.

These same animals are fed approved GM foods; Cotton & Canola in Australia, plus approved imported foods.

4af1123a2a1b032640df736417812c1d

“It’s difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato.” Lewis Grizzard

being REAL, not fake, the good news is in Australia, there are no approved fresh food GMOs (fresh fruit & vegetables). Even more reason FRESH is BEST.

Organically certified food contains no GM products.

Love & light, Charlie x.

Excited to get to the Farmers market tomorrow!

Guilt Free Clean Caramel Slice

A Caramel Slice with no guilt? Is this possible?!

Well, as I am getting a little creative in the kitchen, I made a RAW, Sugar free, Gluten free and Diary free Caramel Slice over the weekend, it wasn’t too bad but my creative mind was thinking; how could this be better

The answer…Proto Whey Protein!

A Caramel slice including Protein, Good Essential Fatty acids, antioxidants and natural sugarsMAGIC (excellent energy source before a workout)!

your stomach shouldn't be a waste basket 1

For those that know me, I have had a love affair with the protein that is Proto Whey (BNRG), and have actually had to break up with the delightful deliciousness that it is! (But, just for you my lovely readers, I revisited my love, and wow, still as good as it always has been!)

So, the Guilt Free Clean Caramel Slice Recipe….

phvetgroto

Ingredients:

*Try to use Organic where possible.

Base:

3/4 cup organic Walnuts

3/4 cup organic Almonds

1 Medjool date

2 Scoops Vanilla Proto Whey (I used The Pept 1 version for Thermogenic effects)

3 Tbsp Coconut oil (Good fats)

1 Tbsp manuka honey (or Rice Malt syrup)

1 Tbsp water

Caramel filling :

10 x Medjool dates

1 Pinch of Himalayan Salt

1 Tbsp Manuka Honey or Rice Malt Syrup (Sugar free)

2 Tbsp Coconut oil

Chocolate topping:

2 x Scoops Chocolate Proto Whey (again, I used the Pept 1 version for thermogenic qualities)

1Tbsp Cacau (Antioxidant)

1 Tbsp Coconut oil

1 Tbsp water

ht4y

Method:

Base: throw all ingredients in a food processor, mix until well blended. Press into a lined tray or plastic moulds (available in cooking stores or online, you can even get cute shapes).

Caramel: throw all ingredients in the food processor, mix. You will need to stop on several occasions to break up the caramel, until you get a nice even consistency. Spread over the base.

Topping: in a bowl, mix all ingredients until well blended (add more water if the icing is to thick, I am a chocolate lover) and smooth over the Caramel layer.

Place into the freezer for 30 minutes and ENJOY.

NBB: don’t forget to share your lovingly made creation with friends and family (sharing is caring), and sometimes we all need a sweet treat.

*I nominated myself for best Area Manager and delivered these little goodies to some of my clients (gets me periodically in the good books).
