Charlie: You are the Founder Jacqueline Evans skin care, a successful natural and organic range, what do you attribute this success to?

So many different factors Charlie. But ultimately I believe it is lots of hard work and having unwavering passion for what you do and what you stand for.

Charlie: When did you decide to you wanted to be involved in the health industry?

After studying Chinese at university, I became very interested in Eastern Medicine. I then went onto to study naturopathy and suddenly everything I was learning at college connected with me; it just made sense. I have an absolute obsession with biochemistry and understanding how the body works. New research is confirming that the food we consume has the ability to ‘communicate’ to our genes, and this verifies that we are able modify certain lifestyle related illness with our food choices. That’s pretty powerful.  After years in the industry looking at food and nutrition, I became aware that the skin is our largest most permeable membrane and will absorb up to 60% of what is applied to it. I quickly looked at the ingredients in all my personal care products and was alarmed. Having a hormonal imbalance myself, but have a balanced diet, this seemed to be the missing part to the puzzle. I spent about 8 years developing the range (and growing the self belief) to launch the range, which is made entirely of natural and organic ingredients.

Charlie: What inspired you to create the range?

After years in the industry looking at food and nutrition, I became aware that the skin is our largest most permeable membrane and will absorb up to 60% of what is applied to it. I quickly looked at the ingredients in all my personal care products and was alarmed. Having a hormonal imbalance myself, but have a balanced diet, this seemed to be the missing part to the puzzle. I spent about 8 years developing the range (and growing the self belief) to launch the range, which is made entirely of natural and organic ingredients. It is our ongoing commitment that no harsh or detrimental ingredients are used. Finally, I wanted to do something different in a very cluttered and sometimes confusing industry; by keeping our range simple, honest and natural.

Charlie: How do you feel as an inspirational figure/mentor?

Thank you. You know, I try to be an inspirational role model for my two daughters. They are my biggest students and also my biggest teachers.  They have taught me lessons like perspective and patience.  I want them to know that they can dream big and achieve anything that want.  I am encouraging them to have a healthy relationship with food and of body image.

Charlie: Has there been any challenges along your journey?

Yes, I’ve been learning as I go that’s for sure.  Starting out, my biggest challenge believed in myself enough to take that leap of faith and quit my full time job and focus on building a skin care brand.  I now have a very small team of amazing people that help me, but starting out the isolation of working on my own was challenging.  I missed having someone next to me to bounce ideas around.  Looking back, this forced me to throw myself out there and network with like-minded souls in the industry and from that I have forged some incredible relationships

 

Charlie: How do you maintain balance between your Career and personal health?

This is such an important question. When you are running your own business, it is 24/7and all consuming, so making the time for yourself simply has to be a priority. For me it’s the little things, the little things that are achievable such as, stopping work and eating lunch at the table or outside with no distractions of the computer, not checking my phone until my work day officially begins, the occasional soak in the bath with some Rose & Vanilla Bath Salts, moving my body, and we have a strict no technology in the bedroom rule and I try very hard to get to bed around 10pm most nights. My non-negotiable is always choosing food to nourish my body.

My mantra for 2014 is to go SLOW.  I feel like I spent last year in fast-forward, and so this year I am desperately trying to live in the moment. Its not always easy or possible, but I am trying.

Charlie: What do you believe are the keys to success in business?

Hard work, passion, self-belief, taking risks, listening and did I mention hard work!?!

My principles are very simple — source the best natural and certified organic ingredients, offer honest, expert advice and create incredible products to feed and nourish your skin.

 

Charlie: What is your advice for anyone who has a dream?

Own your dream, in every sense, then just do it!

The Skin Expert…Your skin.

Today I wanted to introduce you to the gorgeous creation that is your integumentary system; your skin.

All to often we take our skin for granted yet get upset when we get fine lines, acne, spots (especially on those special dates). We have high expectations of healthy, glowing radiant, perfect skin, yet what are you doing to enjoy this?

The Integumentary system is the largest body in the organ, however it often doesn’t receive the nutrients it requires as the internal organs will take what they need first.

The skin has responsibilities such as touch, pain, temperature, absorption and excretion all of which play a detrimental part to our internal and physical health. It also protects us against that nasty stuff called bacteria and other foreign objects.

The skin will show you what is happening internally. In the true manner of Chinese face reading you can decipher what is happening in the body but also the mind {I offer this via Skype, please email me Charlie@charliedehaas.com.au} via skin reading.

Your skin consists of 2 layers the dermis (inner, consists of 2 layers) and the epidermis (the outer layer), consists of 5 layers.

From the Epidermis Our skin cells turnover (desquamate) approx every 28-35 days, this process slows down as we age, as do all of our systems.

At the basal layer, we have happy healthy skin cells, juicy, fresh, radiant. They are fed nutrients and oxygen via the dermis (Melanin, the colour pigment in our skin is also found in the basal layer in Melanocytes). As the desquamation process occurs, these cells start to move upwards towards the outer layers of the skin and begin to die (you shed approximately 30,000+ cells every minute). The dont receive as much nourishment from the dermis as the capillary (blood/delivery system) network starts to diminish. As the cells reach the outer layer, they are dead.

Throughout the epidermis changes occur to the skin cells, this is where pigmentation (can sometimes also be found deeper), acne, skin sensitivities and cell mutations (cancer).

It is imperative we do what we can to protect the integrity of the skin.

We can do this by nourishing from the inside, ensuring we have nutrient dense food in our diets to feed the skin, an also from the outside with delivery systems of effective products.

Skin cells require:

WATER…drink more of it.

Essential fatty acids – promote normal skin cell function. The Rheins barrier (the skins protection system) lies in the top 2/3 layers of the epidermis…this is created by both water and oil lipids.

Vitamin A: promotes cell communication.

Vitamin C: promotes collagen production, anti ageing and skin vibrancy.

Vitamin E: Antioxidant to assist in the prevention of ageing.

Exercise: to promote the flow of nutrients to the cells.

Positive thinking: Your cells respond to the emotions and thought within your body, so send some love.

Interesting facts:

Your skin weighs approx 15% of your total body weight.

Over 50% of the dust in your home is dead skin cells. Keep it clean.

The skin is the finest on the eye area, approx 0.02 mm. This is why it is essential to use eye care products specifically designed for the finer skin.

The Skin Expert…The importance of Cleansing

For those of you (myself included) that perhaps neglect to take your makeup of at night time, this is for you, I also thought cleansing would be a brilliant place to start for ‘The Skin Expert’.

So lets start with one of the most imperative steps to your skincare regime…Cleansing.

Why its important…not to mention the amount of makeup we pile on our faces to be more attractive, but throughout the day we are exposed to environmental toxins, all the suff we can’t see;

  • Persistent organochlorine pollutants (such as dioxins, PCBs some pesticides)
  • Chemicals (such as solvents, formaldehyde, vinyl chloride, some pesticides, ingredients in cosmetics or other substances applied directly to skin)
  • Metals (such as nickel, chromium, etc.)

Our skin is the largest organ of the body and its job is to protect our internal organs. Your skin is the first step of protection and an integral part of your immune system. The skin breathes; inhales (oxygen and nutrients) and exhales, it senses heat, cold, pressure . Also, what we eat becomes us. The food we choose this month, is effectively next months skin. I know myself, if I havent been on form, healthy eating, exercising and thinking…Ill see this in my skin.

Some people may experience skin disease and disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or even pigmentation as a result from toxins on the skin and in the body.

Keep it simple. Cleanse.

Theres no need to invest your $$$ on an ‘advanced’ cleansers, your cleanser is only designed to be on the skin for a few moments, which in this time is not long enough for ‘those’ expensive or ‘miracle’ ingredients to be absorbed all the way to the germinativum layer (the lower level of the epidermis).

What to use?

My advice, stay away from any product containing Sodium Laurel Sulfate (a highly toxic ingredient used by many products to ‘foam’, sometimes seen as SLS), use gentle cleansing products that don’t leave the skin feeling tight or stripped. Generally if you are left with this feeling, the products you have used may contain alcohol, or if it is an active product (alpha hydroxy acids etc) you may have over used the product therefore causing damage to the skins natural defence barrier (also called the rheins barrier). This can also be seen in the skin by an uneven redness. If you start to notice this, monitor the products you are using and how long you are using them for.

A few of my favourite organic skin care cleansers:

Aeos Cleansing Oil De-Maq; a beautiful blend of sesame, avocado and spelt oil to effectively remove makeup (including eye) and surface toxins. This range also incorporates blends of plants extracts with energies from gems and crystals.

Alexami Purifying Gentle cleanser, Aloe vera based so its excellent for sensitive skin (I personally suffer from Rosacea, one of the most difficult skin concerns to treat), white tea as an antioxidant and chamomile. Gentle, yet effective and smells delicious.

People for Plants Foaming Gel Cleanser; containing grapefruit as a refreshing, revitalising extract, this is brilliant for combination skin (especially for that time of the months ladies when you experience breakout because from hormonal changes). Also containing Aloe Vera to calm. This brand is also cruelty free.which I LOVE!

So whats the harm in sleeping with your makeup on? Well as your skin cells naturally desquamate (this means dead skin cells are forced off the surface of the skin as the new skin cells come through. Skin cells have approx a 28 day turnover process) at night time. When you sleep with that makeup on (that enhances your natural beauty)…your skin isn’t able to proliferate these cells properly (so its actually doing the opposite). They cannot breathe and in fact you’re ensuring that the makeup gets trapped within the skin cell layers causing congestion and toxins within the layers of the skin.

If you experience underlying congestion (when you run your fingertips over your skin and feel ‘something’ underneath), this may be a reason.

Get cleansing. Every night. Then nourish with renewing, active ingredients (that’s a post for another day).

So, with just a little insight as to the importance of cleansing, I hope that tonight you do (and every other night).

Self love Sunday…self care (is important)

Perhaps it’s because I surround myself with women that are ‘go getters’, you know, the ones that are always on the go, they have dreams and aspirations, they are those ones who are crazy enough to believe they can change the world (and I have no doubt they will), but I have found that there is feeling of exasperation that’s increasing…the feeling of the weight of the world on your shoulders, even if it is only your surrounding world (that’s more than enough).

‘To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.’ Thich Nhat Hanh

You see for these strong, focus driven, dream chasers their surrounding worlds; partners, lovers, friends and family depend on them and turn to them as a constant source of support and inspiration. Which is of course brilliant, but as I have found, as a giver, a lover, peace sharer; we tend to just keep giving.

Self love Sunday is about reigniting that little light within yourself that can start to dimmer throughout the long week, as sometimes you may give too much or as life throws you challenges. Self love sunday is your time to restore. However self-care is usually the first thing that we compromise, when really, how can we expect to be a source of strength and guidance for others when we arent feeling more than 110% (because I have discovered you need more than that to be able to do so)?

Self love Sunday, invest in yourself. Self care is the most valuable investment you will ever make. Do it regularly.

You deserve it, you are worthy, self care is a NON negotiable.

Use this time to check in with yourself, how are you going? How are you feeling? Stop. Truly ask yourself, how am I feeling? If your feeling a little out of sorts or under pressure, ask yourself, what do I need in this very moment? So, your self care may be different than mine after all we are indiciduals. After 30 years of learning to love myself, my body, my (sometimes/most the time, complicated) mind, my investment is:

Monday Motivation…

Today it is my great pleasure to share with you someone who motivates me everyday, someone who is living proof that you can overcome life’s adversities to change your life and become the person you want to be, living the life you want to live.

Introducing Linda Fenech; Salon owner and therapist of Skin Fitness Hair and Beauty.

Linda began beauty therapy in 1993, 18 years ago. Then in 1996 bought her own salon and has grown her business to where it is today.

Linda: I have two established and busy salons in the Hawkesbury area of NSW with more business opportunities and adventures arising. I have 25 staff who are locally hired and undergo extensive training. All salons and staff have the latest up to date technology, science and trends.

All staff are very experienced in all different aspects of beauty. I have won the local business awards 10 times, winning the overall GOLD prize also for best business in the Hawkesbury and last year won overall best business person in the Hawkesbury 2010, we were awarded and made an Ambassador salon for Napoleon Perdis Makeup, With Napoleon himself inviting me to LA and NY for fashion week. We have also been rewarded with 10 trips to Paris as incentive trips from Payot Paris (prestigious skin care range).

I have a passion and dedication like no other, which is why we have achieved such great awards and results.

NBB: When did you decide you wanted a career in beauty?

I have always been an outgoing girl who just loved people and making them smile. I was 15 years old and in year ten in high school when I saw a job advertisement for an apprenticeship in beauty therapy. I wanted practice with interviewing and thought what do I have to lose. I passed the first two interviews and had a practical work day and I loved it, so much I found my career path.

NBB: Has there been any challenges along your journey?

The absence of family and the time you spend away from them.

NBB: How do you maintain balance between your Career and personal health?

When my marriage broke down I realised I needed to step back and take some time out for me, I had lost touch with who I was and what I wanted from life. I had become depressed and lethargic.

NBB: When did you decide to create change in your life?

I woke up one day and was having a depressed day. I wanted to  pull the covers over my head again and hibernate. I got up made a cup of tea and thought about the people in my life who have overcome adversity, my mum, friends who have lost a child and I thought to myself; I am the only one that can change my situation.

It was not at first a goal to get a fit body, but a healthy mind (also if I’m honest, jealous of my ex husband and his new girlfriend, I wanted to look good).

NBB: How do you feel as an inspirational figure/mentor? You manage a team of young women daily (I know its not an easy task)…

My staff call me mum at times because I like to give them advice and support. Some of my team have lacked friends or family support and I love being their big sister or mum. At times with hormones etc we can all have tough days but honestly overall I hire on good hearts and trade skills. You can always trade skills and learn something however a bad attitude or mental approach is the most difficult to change.

Love what you do, treat people well and work harder than anyone else.

Brush your Body

Have you ever brushed your body? Perhaps this may sound absurd, but it is a daily practice I highly promote (to every single person who will listen).
In actual fact, when asked what my favourite beauty product is, I would easily and honestly reply, a dry body brush.

I’m sure by now you are familiar with the circulatory system, the capillary network, the delivery of nutrients and oxygen throughout our body.
I want to introduce you to a system that is all to often forgotten about and we should be more aware of; your Lynphatic system.

The lymphatic system runs alongside your circulation and is responsible for the removal of waste and bacteria from your body, also known as lymph. The easiest way describe it; your lymphatic system is your body’s own waste/garbage removal system. The lymph (waste) is delivered to the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes destroy pathogens, toxins and bacteria. The lymph nodes are located at the base of the neck (cervical), armpit (axillary), collarbone (supraclavicular), lungs (mediastinal), abdomen (mesentry), and in the groin (inguinal).imagesCADKIPR7

So, how can we promote a healthy Lymphatic system???
Unlike the circulatory system which is controlled by our largest muscle; the heart, the lymphatic system requires manual manipulation to promote lymphatic drainage. Exercise (muscular contraction) , hot and cold hydrotherapy, Lymphatic massage (which if you ever have the pleasure of receiving one, is extremely light on the skin), and my favourite way to promote Lymphatic Flow; dry body brushing.

It’s as simple as a few moments each day (up to 10 minutes is sufficient), using a cactus bristle brush. Start from your feet and move upwards towards the Heart, promote the flow of the toxins onto the lymph nodes and at the same time receive these fabulous benefits:
*Exfoliation/removal of dead skin cells.
*Improved appearance of cellulite (seriously this alone is reason enough to Body brush every morning AND night.
*Assists removal of excess fluid.
*Promote delivery of nutrients to your bodys organs and skin (the largest organ within the body).

(Did I mention improves the appearance of cellulite??)

*Brush upwards to promote Lymphatic flow & circulation towards the heart.
*Brush in the morning for lympahtic stimulation.
*Focus on (troublesome/cellulite) areas of concern.
*Clean your Brush x1 weekly with tea tree oil/water.
